Jellick 6th Graders Make A Difference - Donate to Rowland Heights Library for 20th Year!

Jellick 6th Graders Make a Difference: For the past 20 years, 6th grade students in Mrs. Buck’s class at Jellick Elementary have kept a very special tradition going to support their local community. Each May students sell colorful, plastic Rexlace strings after school to all the students on campus.  At the end of the month, the 6th graders walk to the Rowland Heights County Library, in order to bring their profits as a donation for the purchase of new books. (The students take other trips during the year to learn research and study skills in the library.)

After receiving the donation, the Children’s Librarian, Jeff Jarrett, asks the students for suggestions on how to spend the funds; asking for their favorite series, authors, or future releases. Once the books are purchased, the library places a bookplate sticker inside the front cover, acknowledging the books as donations from Jellick Elementary 6th grade students from Mrs. Buck’s class, as well as from Mr. Macedonio, Ms. Caro and Mrs. Dovetko who have also joined her along the way!

“This year we are so proud that our students raised $534.00 – that is one quarter at a time – bringing the total donations to this library to $7,785! With those funds, the library has purchased more than 600 books! The most rewarding thing for the Jellick staff is seeing our 6th graders making a difference in their community and that they are helping to enrich the library’s collection of books for all ages to enjoy,” said Mrs. Buck.
