"The Force" of Reading Was Strong at Jellick's Dr. Seuss Day March 2

"THE FORCE" OF READING WAS STRONG AS STORMTROOPERS FROM 501ST LEGION AND COMMUNITY LEADERS READ TO CHILDREN FOR DR. SEUSS DAY

To celebrate the fantastical world of reading and Dr. Seuss’s Birthday, characters from a galaxy far, far away visited students at Jellick Elementary on Friday, March 2. Members from the “501st Legion,” the largest Star Wars volunteer costuming group of “villainous” favorites such as Imperial Stormtroopers and Darth Vader himself, read to elementary students. In addition, the Jellick school community were excited to read to children including: Assemblymember Phillip Chen, representatives from the offices of Congressman Ed Royce and Senator Newman, officers from the Walnut Sheriff’s Department and local Fire Department, Chaffey Federal Credit Union, and 20 representatives from the City of Industry Target.

The 501st Legion is the largest all-volunteer organization formed of approved costume enthusiasts from around the world (more than 10,000 members in 50 countries!) that promotes an interest in Star Wars and that has raised millions of dollars for charity. They share the magic of Star Wars to fans of all ages and members are from all walks of life – teachers, policemen, librarians, truck drivers, nurses, mechanics, tech specialists, mothers and fathers.

NEA's Read Across America Day, which celebrates Dr. Seuss's birthday and the joys of reading, expects more than 45 million readers, both young and old, to pick up a book and read. Schools across the Rowland Unified School District have planned events celebrating literacy the entire week and the excitement made famous by the infamous Cat in the Hat.
